QUESTION & ANSWER

23/10/2007
FATTY DEGENERATION OF THE LIVER
Manuela

Question: What is fatty degeneration of the liver? What can be done about it and does the liver recover?

Answer: Long-term excessive alcohol consumption can damage the liver: small lumps of fat develop in the liver cells. Fatty degeneration of the liver often comes without symptoms, so you could be unaware of the damage. In some patients the liver becomes enlarged, which sometimes causes pain in the top right area of the stomach. If you keep on drinking this can finally cause life-threatening cirrhosis in which the liver function is weakened and might fail. The only effective treatment for fatty degeneration of the liver is to stop drinking alcohol altogether. In many cases the development of fat disappears within three to six months.
