QUESTION & ANSWER

23/01/2008
Coughing because of alcohol?
G.L.

Question: can alcohol cause coughing? Even a consulted lung specialist was unable to find the cause of the coughing fits that my husband has been suffering these past 17 months. He has never smoked, but drinks alcohol in various sorts of drink, at least one glass per day. After many tests not one doctor has been able to discover the cause of this coughing.

Answer: there are no indications that moderate alcohol consumption should lead to coughing. In fact, many kinds of cough syrup contain (small amounts) of alcohol. Your husband is not the only one to complain of chronic coughing attacks in recent months. According to a good many specialists the causes are to be sought mainly in air pollution, more particularly in the microscopically small dust particles released in certain industrial and transport activities. The concentration of such dust particles regularly exceeds the recommended limit values.
