QUESTION & ANSWER

05/05/2008
TWELVE BOTTLES A DAY

Question: for a couple of years now I have been drinking about 10 to 12 bottles of beer per day, I weigh 62 kilos, eat well and drink about 2 to 3 big glasses of water a day. Can this harm my physical health? I have not had any problems so far. I am 42 years old.

Jolanda

Answer: the recommended quantity of beer is 1 to 2 glasses per day (beer of an alcoholic strength by volume of approximately 5 percent alcohol) for women, 2 to 3 glasses for men. Such quantities have a beneficial health effect. Once above that you enter the risk zone for cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, impairment of brain functions and so forth. So, with ten glasses a day you greatly exceed the safe limit, regardless of how much water you drink. How high your personal risk is will depend on certain individual characteristic (body weight, general health, physical condition, …). Drinking these amounts will in any case damage your health sooner or later.
