QUESTION & ANSWER

29/08/2008
THE SHAKES BECAUSE OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Question: You get the shakes if you drink too much, or is it exactly the other way round?

Trees

Answer: Drinking too much alcohol over a long period may lead to chronic shaking (mostly referred to as tremor). It usually concerns the trembling of the hands, but the coordination of the movements of the arms and legs may also be affected. This is the result of damage by excessive alcohol consumption to the cerebellum, an area of the brain that coordinates movement.  Small amounts of alcohol may temporarily reduce the tremors in about half of all cases. The trembling can be reduced by medication that can be requested from your general practitioner, but it can never be eliminated.
