3rd Beer and Health Symposium: report

Beer drunk in moderation has the potential to protect against cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and osteoporosis. These are some of the messages given to key policy makers, MEPs and European Commission officials at a major symposium held by The Brewers of Europe in Brussels on 15th October 2003.

The Brewers of Europe - President Mr Piero Perron said: “Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the world and there are many positive health benefits associated with moderate consumption. Beer is a nutritious drink made from cereal, which contributes to people’s health, yet there is a common misconception that only red wine is good for you.”

At the previous two Beer and Health symposia organised by the Brewers of Europe scientists confirmed that beer plays a part, along with other alcoholic drinks, in reducing the risk of heart disease and discussed the significance of preliminary evidence of benefits unique to beer. This 3rd Beer and Health Symposium provided an overview of the latest research into the proven and potential health benefits of moderate beer consumption.

The key points to emerge were:

  • Drinking beer in moderation brings pleasure to millions of consumers and helps to relieve stress.
  • Moderate consumption of beer, in common with other alcoholic drinks, is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks may also protect against type II diabetes.
  • Beer is made from wholesome ingredients which bring vitamins and minerals to the finished product which contribute to a healthy balanced diet.
  • Beer contains high levels of silicon which is thought to contribute to healthy bones.
  • Beer has fewer calories than most other drinks and, drunk in moderation, could add enjoyment to a calorie controlled diet and a healthy lifestyle.
