SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
alcohol and body

15/11/2001
Alcohol particularly beneficial for the elderly

Alcohol protects the heart and blood vessels. Death from cardiovascular disease is 2% lower among moderate drinkers than among total abstainers.

Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine would seem to show as much. They studied the mortality figures in England and Wales for between 1996 and 1998. Analysis showed that the benefits of a moderate alcohol consumption were felt more in the older population and less among younger drinkers, who run a higher risk of traffic accidents and liver disease. The researcher staff concluded that the beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption on the heart and blood vessels mainly concerns men over the age of 55 and women over the age of 65.
