SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
alcohol and body

JUGGLING WITH FIGURES

A study conducted in 2002 on the relation between alcohol and an increased risk of breast cancer calculated that drinking one glass of alcoholic beverage a day increased the risk of breast cancer by 7% to 8%. With two glasses that would be 14% to 18% ... Women who drink an average of four glasses per day would be more likely to contract the condition by some 28% to 32% than women who stick to mineral water.

This is an example of risk misrepresentation. That 32% must be divided by the 11% probability of contracting breast cancer in the average woman. This gives a result of 3.5. This means that the risk for four glasses a day rises from 11% to 14.5%, and for one glass a day from 11% to 11.8%. That is a good deal less than the suggested 32%. Then there is also the fact that 1 to 2 glasses a day has a proven beneficial effect regarding cardiovascular diseases and for physical health in general.
