alcohol and body 05/06/2007 ALCOHOL AND SUNBURN
Some 300 000 subjects, mostly from the USA, were questioned about their drinking patterns and their exposure to sunlight. Sunburn was defined as the time during which even a small area of the skin remains red for more than 12 hours in the course of the past 12 months. For an answer in the affirmative the further question was then asked: how often did this occur?
One third of the respondents answered in the affirmative. The statistical analysis showed a clear association between the incidence of sunburn and amount of drink. This was especially clear for excessive (binge) drinking. The relation held good in all cases upon division into different subgroups (age, gender, …). According to the researchers this is not necessarily a cause and effect relation: it may equally well be a matter of two independent phenomena having the same cause. However, they take the view that excessive alcohol consumption is the most obvious cause: when drinking too much alcohol we are less aware of the risk of staying out too long in the sun, and we are more likely to fall asleep in the heat of the sun.
