MODERATE DRINKING GOOD FOR THE BRAIN

Some of the world’s top neuroscientists gathered in the United States to discuss the most recent advances in brain health. Professor Bartlett argued that moderate alcohol consumption may be beneficial for the health of the brain.

Professor Perry Bartlett, director of the Queensland Brain Institute, said that research demonstrates that, contrary to what we may have thought up to now, alcoholic beverages do not kill off the brain cells. Moderate drinking is even beneficial for the blood vessels, says Bartlett: ”It might even help to prevent strokes and heart disease, so there is a positive effect of moderate drinking on the health of the brain”. The researchers dismiss it as a myth that no more brain cells are produced after birth. Contrariwise, brain cells continue to be produced even among old people, which is very important for the maintenance of good mental health.
