ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION AND AGE-RELATED DIABETES

Moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes (age-related diabetes). Such the conclusion of a study by Joline Beulens and her team on behalf of the Dutch TNT study centre and Wageningen University.

Beulens found that one to three standard glasses of alcohol a day increased the blood levels of the hormone adiponectin. This hormone is produced in the adipose (fat) tissue, and its increase through moderate alcohol consumption would seem to offer protection against the appearance of diabetes.

The type of alcoholic beverage (beer, wine or spirits) makes no difference to the reduction of the risk, which indicates that the effect is rather caused by the alcohol itself.
