Alcohol and breast feeding

Alcohol is not broken down before it gets into breast milk. The alcohol concentration in the milk is as high as in the blood. It is therefore best to use alcohol economically while breast feeding.

Brown beer when breast feeding

When breast feeding a woman has to drink more, preferably one to two litres a day. Therefore women are often encouraged to drink a glass of brown beer a day. A midwives’ tale that nevertheless holds true. Brown beer not only provides extra fluid but also contains vitamin B. In addition the low quantity of alcohol has a calming effect, and a calm mother is important for adequate milk production. The preference is for beer with a low alcohol content.
