BEER AND SUGAR

Question: My husband has been told he has high sugar levels. Since beer is known to contain sugar, can this increased sugar content come from beer consumption?

G.W.

Answer: There are many possible causes of increased sugar content in the blood, both endogenous and causes related to diet. The sugar content of (ordinary lager-type) beer is very low and will make only a very limited contribution to the normal sugar consumption. Furthermore even diabetics can tolerate beer consumption without problems. This, of course, applies to limited quantities of beer only. The assessment of a specific case is best left to the general practitioner.
